Passing The Torch … Or Should I Say The Flashlight App?

When President Kennedy announced that “the torch has been passed to a new generation,” no one, except maybe science-fiction writers, could have imagined the extent to which this was true and the far-reaching effects it would have — especially for technology. Over the next 60 years, technological advances have altered how we go about nearly all aspects of our day-to-day lives. Take music, for example. In many ways, its role in society hasn’t changed. Music brings us together, allows us to share common experiences. It delights, soothes and inspires us. (Unless we’re talking about my 16-year-old son’s musical taste. There’s nothing inspiring there.) So, what has changed? There was a time, of course, when the only way to listen to music was to be in the room when the music was being played. Over time, we developed technology to record music, take it with us and listen on the go. Even taking the small slice of time since music has gone digital, the progress is incredible. Over the course of less than a generation, we’ve gone from marveling at the wonder of iPods to thinking nothing of our ability to hear nearly any song by asking a smart speaker to play it for us. Much the same can ...

Global Suspended Electromagnets Market: Key companies Profile, their market Share and other important parameters

A Suspended Electromagnet provides tramp metal collection from conveyed materials. The electromagnet is typically mounted or suspended over a conveyor belt to remove large pieces of tramp metal that represent a hazard to downstream crushers, mills, pulverizers and grinders. Suspended electromagnets also remove sharp metal that can damage or tear expensive conveyor belts, especially at transfer points. Product purity is enhanced with the separation power of the suspended electromagnet. Nowadays, most brand new cars leave the factory with USB ports inside the cabin, allowing you

Nowadays, most brand new cars leave the factory with USB ports inside the cabin, allowing you and your passengers to charge your mobile devices. While USB ports do come in handy for daily use, they don’t offer enough power to charge larger accessories. Maybe you often go camping and want to hook up a small coffee maker while you’re out in the woods. Or there’s a chance you’re a photographer or videographer who needs to keep batteries or a laptop fully charged while on the go. In today’s connected world, there are plenty of devices that need more than a USB port for charging, and that’s where power inverters come in handy. Power inverters are an easy way of converting your car’s DC electric power into AC electric power, which can be used to power or charge a wide range of appliances and accessories. Now, you won’t be plugging in a full-sized fridge into your car, but power inverters will make your life a lot easier on the road by helping you charge or power your laptop, TV, or even a hair dryer. Shopping for a good power inverter may seem like a fairly straightforward task, but they’re not that simple. You’ll find that there are several different types of power inverters, most of...

Samsung’s new Galaxy A line is slowly rolling out and there are already 7 phones in

Samsung’s new Galaxy A line is slowly rolling out and there are already 7 phones in it. Samsung just unveiled the forerunner of the new series today but in this piece we’ll focus not on the Galaxy A80 but on the Galaxy A40. This phone is easily among the best affordable compact phones. It’s not much taller than a Galaxy S10e and is lighter by 10 grams, all the while having a slightly bigger screen and same size battery. The Galaxy A40 also brings a bigger screen than last year’s Galaxy S9 while retaining a smaller footprint. That display is a perfect middle ground between big and small at 5.9-inches. It’s a superb Super AMOLED panel that’s nicely pixel-rich at 1080x2340px and is surrounded by slim bezels and with a small notch. The small cutout in the screen houses a 25MP f/2.0 selfie camera. We have the Blue unit that hides an interesting shimmer which comes alive under direct light. It reminds us a bit of the vivo NEX S of last year. If hit directly with strong light the Blue exhibits Yellow, Red, Purple and Green hues, which add a flair that would be wasted under a case. The rear of the Samsung Galaxy A40 is where you’ll find two came...

Here’s Which New Electric Pickups Will Compete With Tesla’s ‘Cybertruck’ By 2021

When Tesla CEO Elon Musk took the wraps off of the company’s “Cybertruck” full-electric pickup earlier this month, industry observers let out a collective gasp. All angular in appearance and looking more like a cobbled together copy of the old Lotus Elan secret agent James Bond drove – underwater no less – in the movie Thunderball, Musk claims to have received more than 200,000 reservations for it within 72 hours of its unveiling at $100 a pop. Considering Musk hopes to build as much as 50,000 units annually, that represents four years of production, and a cool $20 million in the company’s coffers to spend on final development.  But the Tesla is not the only electric pickup truck that will be coming to market in the coming years. No fewer than eight battery-powered haulers are planned to arrive in the U.S. by 2021. Whether the market is ready for so many electrified pickup trucks hitting the streets in such a short timeframe is anybody’s guess. It’s also yet to be seen whether the five startup companies involved will all be able to ultimately deliver the goods, let alone establish a dealer network, as planned. All told, the players involved could be responsible for building a qu...

Manta rays feed using ricochet separation, a novel nonclogging filtration mechanism

Solid-liquid filtration is a ubiquitous process found in industrial and biological systems. Although implementations vary widely, almost all filtration systems are based on a small set of fundamental separation mechanisms, including sieve, cross-flow, hydrosol, and cyclonic separation. Anatomical studies showed that manta rays have a highly specialized filter-feeding apparatus that does not resemble previously described filtration systems. We examined the fluid flow around the manta filter-feeding apparatus using a combination of physical modeling and computational fluid dynamics. Our results indicate that manta rays use a unique solid-fluid separation mechanism in which direct interception of particles with wing-like structures causes particles to “ricochet” away from the filter pores. This filtration mechanism separates particles smaller than the pore size, allows high flow rates, and resists clogging. Several fundamental mechanisms for solid-fluid separation have been described in the biological and engineering literature, including sieve (1, 2), cross-flow (3–6), hydrosol (7), and cyclonic separation (8). Sieve filtration passes a mixture of particles and fluid through a str...

As regular readers of this website have come to expect, we periodically focus on specific AM

As regular readers of this website have come to expect, we periodically focus on specific AM verticals in the aptly named AM Focus section. What this means is that we select a particular AM vertical to zoom in on during a particular time of the year. The AM Focus are permanent sections of the 3D Printing Media Network website that are highlighted with a special section of the homepage and lots of original content created by our editors: exclusive webinars, surveys, round-ups, eBooks (new this year) and feature pieces, including interviews with segment key stakeholders, from both an AM-centric and AM-adopter point of views. They are also opportunities for these stakeholders to partner with 3dpbm and work with our editors to great original content along with unique, noninvasive marketing operations. The verticals that we choose to highlight coincide with the segments that we expect to be most relevant for AM in the upcoming year. These are the 12 key AM verticals 2020. We expect that 2020 will be a key year for automotive AM adoption. New metal and polymer production technologies are now ripe for more widespread adoption by most automotive OEM’s, while traditional technologies are...
